Growing IT firm has web designs on you

The Xtensive Team

This week we speak to Colin Thomas of Xtensive Web Design in St James Business Centre, Linwood Road.

This is a small web design company based in Paisley, delivering web design, e-commerce, SEO and social media services to over 200 clients across Renfrewshire and throughout the world. The company was started when Colin was made redundant by the AA where he had worked for 20 years as a Lead Software Developer. They were also graduates of the University of the West of Scotland. Clients in Paisley include Eigen Interiors, A&B Window Blinds, Saltire Plumbing Supplies, Salt & Grit Solutions, Paisley Mortgage Centre and Ferguslie Pre-Five Centre.

What does your business do?

We specialise in Web Design, eCommerce, Social Media and Search Engine Optimisation

What are you most proud of when it comes to your company?

Having more than 200 clients with more than 75 of them in Renfrewshire and even having clients in four other countries across three continents.

What do you find most enjoyable in day-to-day business life?

Great teamwork and atmosphere here in our office. Also having a great community of clients, the Paisley community spirit is fantastic.

What are your ambitions for the future?

To grow and expand into a large web design company dominating the market without losing the customer focus that is crucial to our offering.

How has the business changed over the years?

I originally worked from home and had about 50 clients, but we quickly expanded in 2013 to have an office and a new employee and again we expanded this year to have a second employee and we now have a list of over 200 clients that is growing by the day. Where we used to have to advertise, now our new work is from ‘word of mouth’ referrals.

What are your top three priorities?

Customer Service, Technical Capability and growing the business.

Can you offer three tips to new-start businesses?

Employ people through Invest in Renfrewshire.

Don’t build your own website, it won’t work for you

Your time is important, always think of how much your time is worth and what you are doing in that time.

Why is Renfrewshire a great place to run a business?

The community spirit is incredible, probably helped by being in and around Paisley all my life. There’s always a link to someone or something that makes doing business so much easier. Businesses tend to want to use local companies and there’s pretty much something for everyone in Renfrewshire.

Has anything weird or wonderful happened in your working life?

Well during my working life, I got married and had a family. That has to come under the wonderful banner. Ending up being a co-host on the ‘Business Time’ Radio show on Pulse 98.4 is a bit of a weird thing that has happened in my working life, but it’s great fun.

What is the main thing you have learned since being involved in the business?

Customer service is King. There are so many web design companies that don’t look after their customers. A company without customers is not a company. That will always be our key priority.
